How to Save on Streaming and Subscriptions in Switzerland

Streaming becomes expensive through accumulation, not one dramatic bill. A household adds music, television, films, cloud storage, news, fitness and app subscriptions at different times, then evaluates each CHF 10 to CHF 25 charge in isolation.

The fix is to annualise the entire stack, cancel overlap and rotate entertainment services around what will actually be watched. Sharing plans can help only when the household meets the provider’s current eligibility rules.

Prices below were checked on 11 August 2026 and can change. Confirm the renewal price inside the account before acting.

What current Swiss prices reveal

Official provider pages showed these examples:

ServicePlanCurrent monthly price checked
SpotifyIndividualCHF 15.95
SpotifyDuo, same-address conditionCHF 21.95
SpotifyFamily, up to six eligible same-address family membersCHF 26.95
Disney+Standard with ads after promotion/minimum termCHF 9.90
Disney+Standard after promotion/minimum termCHF 16.90
Disney+Premium after promotion/minimum termCHF 23.40
ZattooPremiumCHF 14.00
ZattooUltimateCHF 22.00

This is not a recommendation or a complete market ranking. It illustrates the annual effect. Spotify Individual plus Disney+ Premium plus Zattoo Ultimate is CHF 61.35 a month, or CHF 736.20 a year. Adding four smaller CHF 5 subscriptions takes the stack to CHF 976.20.

Promotional prices need special care. Disney+ currently displays lower prices for an initial six-month minimum term, followed by higher current monthly prices. Budget across the full intended period, not the banner month.

Find subscriptions without trusting memory

Review:

  • the last 13 months of bank and credit-card statements;
  • Apple and Google subscription settings;
  • PayPal and mobile-wallet automatic payments;
  • telecom and internet bills containing bundled services;
  • annual invoices in email;
  • family members’ cards.

Use 13 months because an annual renewal can sit just outside a twelve-month view. Record service, price, billing interval, payment method, next renewal and cancellation path.

Convert everything to annual francs:

monthly subscription × 12 = annual cost

weekly subscription × 52 = annual cost

The weekly plan is often the one people underestimate.

Calculate cost per use

For the previous 90 days, estimate hours watched or meaningful uses. A CHF 22 service watched for 20 hours costs CHF 1.10 per hour. The same service opened for one two-hour event costs CHF 11 per hour.

Cost per hour is not a moral judgement. It simply exposes subscriptions kept for imagined future use. A beloved niche service used weekly can be better value than a cheap app never opened.

Classify each service:

  • keep continuously;
  • rotate for one or two months;
  • replace with a free or already included option;
  • cancel now.

Rotate video services

Most households do not need several full catalogues every month. Keep a watchlist outside the app, subscribe when several desired programmes are available, then cancel renewal and finish the list during the paid period.

Rotation works badly for live sport and weekly shows spread across a long season. For those, price the exact months required and compare a day pass or venue visit where available. Do not use illegal streams; the security and legal risks are not a saving.

Download rights usually end when the subscription ends or the title leaves the catalogue. Do not count downloads as permanent ownership.

Household plans: read the address rule

Spotify’s current Duo and Family pages specify same-address eligibility, with Family intended for eligible family members. Similar plans define households differently. Do not sell spare places to strangers or misstate addresses to reduce the bill.

Where eligible, compare:

household-plan annual cost ÷ actual eligible users

Spotify Family at CHF 26.95 is CHF 323.40 a year. With four genuine eligible users, the effective cost is CHF 80.85 each. Four separate Individual plans would cost CHF 765.60. The gross household difference is CHF 442.20, provided all users genuinely want Premium and meet the terms.

Audit bundles before paying twice

Internet, mobile, bank and credit-card packages may include media or cloud services. Included does not mean free if the package costs more than a simpler alternative.

Example:

  • internet-only plan: CHF 45 a month;
  • internet and TV bundle: CHF 59.90 a month;
  • incremental TV cost: CHF 14.90 a month, or CHF 178.80 a year.

Compare that increment with a standalone product and the exact channels or features needed. Also check setup fees and minimum terms. Zattoo’s current Home offers, for example, display a CHF 77 setup fee and a twelve-month minimum term.

Cancelling streaming does not cancel Serafe

The Swiss radio and television household fee is separate from every commercial streaming or television package. OFCOM states that private households generally pay CHF 335 a year and that the fee is levied regardless of whether the household owns receiving equipment.

Removing Zattoo, a cable-TV package or every video subscription therefore does not remove the Serafe bill. Do not count CHF 335 as a streaming saving in a cancellation calculation.

The fee is per private household, not per adult subscription. OFCOM says all adults shown on the bill are jointly liable. In a shared flat, agree how the one household bill will be divided rather than allowing two residents to reserve the full amount separately. Address errors should be corrected through the responsible residents’ register or Serafe procedure, not by ignoring the invoice.

This distinction also improves bundle comparisons. Separate the unavoidable household fee from optional internet, television and streaming charges, then optimise only the optional portion.

Trials and cancellation dates

Start a free trial only when there is time to evaluate it. Immediately save:

  • final free date;
  • first paid amount;
  • minimum term;
  • cancellation path;
  • confirmation email.

Cancelling renewal immediately after starting often preserves access through the trial or paid period, but verify the provider’s terms. A calendar reminder three days before renewal is useful backup, not a substitute for cancellation confirmation.

Annual plan or monthly flexibility?

Use this break-even test:

annual price ÷ monthly price = months of use needed for the annual plan to win

If an annual plan costs CHF 120 and monthly access costs CHF 15, it wins after eight paid months. If the service is used for one three-month season, monthly costs CHF 45 and is much cheaper.

Annual plans carry provider and lifestyle risk. Catalogue changes, relocation or loss of interest can erase the discount. Pay annually only for a stable service with strong use history and adequate cancellation rights.

A quarterly 20-minute reset

  1. Export transactions and search recurring merchants.
  2. Annualise every charge.
  3. Check usage and duplication.
  4. Cancel at least one unused service immediately.
  5. Schedule the next rotation or renewal review.
  6. Save cancellation confirmations.

Do not keep a subscription merely because cancelling feels administratively annoying. That friction is part of the business model.

Final verdict

The largest saving rarely comes from finding a CHF 1 cheaper music plan. It comes from seeing the entire annual stack, sharing only under valid household rules and paying for one entertainment catalogue at a time.
