How to Cut Your Electricity Bill in Switzerland

The most useful fact about a Swiss household electricity bill is also the least exciting: most households cannot save money by switching supplier. The practical savings come from understanding the local tariff, measuring the devices that use the most electricity and avoiding expensive upgrades that will never repay their purchase price.

ElCom, the federal electricity regulator, says households consuming less than 100 MWh a year currently remain in basic supply and cannot freely choose their supplier. Your municipality or local grid therefore matters more than a national list of supposedly cheap providers.

What a Swiss electricity bill actually contains

The bill is not simply the market price of energy. ElCom separates the 2026 household tariff into four parts:

  • energy, meaning the electricity supplied;
  • grid use, which pays for transporting it;
  • metering, shown separately from 2026;
  • public charges, including federal and local levies.

For the standard H4 household profile, defined as a five-room flat using 4,500 kWh a year, ElCom reported a median 2026 tariff of 27.7 centimes per kWh. That produces an annual bill of about CHF 1,247. The median is a reference point, not a promise. Local tariffs differ, and fixed charges mean a 10% reduction in consumption may cut the total bill by less than 10%.

Read the tariff sheet for your municipality rather than comparing only the final direct-debit amount. Find the price per kWh, annual or monthly fixed charges, and whether your supplier offers high and low tariff periods. A dishwasher run at night saves nothing if your tariff is flat.

Turn kWh into francs before buying anything

Use this calculation:

annual running cost = device power in kW × hours used per year × electricity price per kWh

At the ElCom median of CHF 0.277 per kWh, a 100-watt device running continuously would cost about CHF 243 a year: 0.1 × 8,760 × 0.277. A ten-watt device running continuously would cost about CHF 24.

That calculation prevents two common mistakes. First, it shows why reducing the use of heating elements can matter far more than unplugging a modern phone charger. Secondly, it gives an upper limit for an efficient replacement. Spending CHF 900 on a new appliance to save CHF 35 a year is not a quick money-saving decision, even if it reduces energy consumption.

Measure before you optimise

An inexpensive plug-in power meter can reveal the annual cost of a fridge, freezer, dehumidifier, desktop computer or entertainment system. Some municipalities, libraries and electricity providers lend meters, so check locally before buying one.

Measure a fridge or freezer for several days because its compressor cycles. Measure a dehumidifier through a representative damp period. For a washing machine or dishwasher, record one full cycle and multiply it by realistic weekly use.

EnergySwiss notes that standby consumption varies by device and age. Its practical advice is to switch suitable groups fully off with a switched power strip and to pay particular attention to networked devices. Do not disconnect equipment that provides essential functions, needs updates or belongs to the landlord without checking first.

The largest no-cost changes

Wash at the lowest suitable temperature

Heating water is a major part of a washing cycle's energy use. Use the garment and machine instructions, fill the drum without overloading it, and reserve high-temperature programmes for loads that actually need them. Eco programmes often take longer because they use lower temperatures and less energy.

Reduce tumble-dryer cycles

Spin laundry properly and air-dry where the building rules and ventilation allow. A drying rack that causes persistent indoor condensation is a false economy, so ventilate correctly and follow tenancy guidance.

Cook to the task

Use a lid, match the pan to the hob and heat only the water required. A kettle is useful for small amounts of water. Batch cooking may reduce repeated oven warm-up, but only if the food is genuinely eaten rather than wasted.

Check hot-water settings responsibly

In some homes, domestic hot water is billed through electricity; in others it is central and appears in ancillary costs. Do not lower storage temperatures blindly because water hygiene matters. Tenants should ask the landlord or building management which system they have and who controls it.

Stop paying for empty-space consumption

An unused second freezer, a permanently heated spare room or a dehumidifier with no humidity target can outweigh dozens of tiny charger savings. Measure these first.

A worked 4,500 kWh example

Consider a household paying the 2026 median of CHF 0.277 per kWh and using 4,500 kWh. Its energy-linked cost is roughly CHF 1,247 before allowing for the way fixed charges are presented.

Suppose careful measurement identifies these avoidable uses:

  • 150 fewer tumble-dryer cycles at an illustrative 2 kWh each: 300 kWh;
  • an entertainment and office setup reduced by an average 20 watts for 18 hours a day: about 131 kWh;
  • better scheduling and use of a dehumidifier: 180 kWh;
  • smaller washing, cooking and lighting gains: 120 kWh.

The total is 731 kWh. At 27.7 centimes per kWh, the consumption saving is about CHF 203 a year. These device figures are examples, not national averages. Replace every assumption with readings from your own equipment. If your tariff is 22 centimes, the same reduction is worth about CHF 161; at 35 centimes it is about CHF 256.

Should you replace an old appliance?

Compare total ownership cost, not only the energy label. Topten Switzerland provides efficiency comparisons for products sold in Switzerland, while the federal energy-label guidance explains the scale used for the relevant product.

For a working fridge, calculate:

  1. the old appliance's measured annual kWh;
  2. the candidate's declared annual kWh;
  3. the difference multiplied by your local tariff;
  4. purchase, delivery and disposal cost;
  5. expected life and any repair risk.

If the old unit uses 450 kWh and the replacement 180 kWh, the saving at CHF 0.277 is about CHF 75 a year. A CHF 900 replacement has a simple energy-only payback of 12 years. Replacement may still make sense if the appliance is failing, noisy or too large, but the electricity saving alone is not compelling.

Tenants should not replace built-in landlord-owned appliances themselves. Report faults and ask who is responsible.

Solar, batteries and dynamic products

Homeowners face a different calculation. Rooftop solar can reduce purchased electricity, but the answer depends on roof suitability, self-consumption, financing, municipal rules, tax treatment and the local payment for exported power. A battery can increase self-consumption but adds substantial capital cost. Obtain several itemised quotes and model annual cash flows rather than accepting a headline payback claim.

Tenants and flat owners may be offered a local self-consumption arrangement. Check the contract, metering, exit conditions and price against the regulated basic-supply alternative.

A 30-minute bill-cutting routine

  1. Find annual kWh, not only francs paid.
  2. Look up the current municipal tariff on ElCom.
  3. Separate fixed charges from per-kWh charges.
  4. List devices with high wattage or long running hours.
  5. Measure the top three for at least a representative cycle or several days.
  6. Make no-cost changes first and compare the next full billing period.
  7. Buy a replacement only after calculating annual francs saved.

The goal is not to make the home inconvenient for a tiny theoretical saving. It is to find the few hundred kWh that nobody values, remove them and verify the result on the meter.
